NIT Calicut was established on September 1, 1961 as Calicut Regional Engineering College (REC) and was granted Institute of National Importance/NIT status in 2002. It is one of the oldest and most reputed NITs in India, with a 120-hectare residential campus about 22 km from Kozhikode city. It is consistently ranked among India's top-25 engineering institutes by NIRF, with its Architecture & Planning and Management programs also nationally ranked.

Admission
UG admission to B.Tech and B.Arch is based purely on JEE Main (Paper 1) performance, with seats allocated through centralized JoSAA/CSAB counselling — there is no separate institute application for domestic students. A limited number of supernumerary seats exist for foreign nationals/NRIs/PIOs via the DASA scheme.
